Otion recently signed up to be a Vocation Vacation. What is a “Vocation Vacation?” A Vocation Vacation is a short trip where curious job seekers or career shifters can test drive a new job for one or two days. A vocationer pays a mentor to download the good, the bad and the ugly part of their jobs. There are Vocation Vacations designed for cheese making, running an opera house, being a cowboy or running a public relations firm. Click here to see all the jobs currently open to test drive.
For the last two days, I have been in the heart of downtown Seattle at Richmond PR, learning the fine art of public relations from Louie Richmond and his staff at RPR. Yesterday was a full day, run with military like precision. Louie had me going from staff member to staff member, learning all I could about the individual jobs that they do. I even got to have lunch with all the interns and hear what their perceptions are about the field of public relations. Their fresh (just out school) perspective was an interesting contrast to some of the vetrens.
I am amazed at how much access Louie has given me to his staff and his openness about the difficulties of setting up a public relations shop. After just a day and a half here, I have come to the conclusion that the work done at Richmond PR would be difficult (if not impossible) to duplicate at my own company. The machinery and experience that RPR has makes all the flailing around I do with media relations look pathetic and downright inept.
Today, I will be learning about budgeting, planning a media campaign and reviewing some press kits for product launches. Louie will also be finishing up his philosophy on ethics and truth telling in media relations. After this positive experience, I would definitely consider another Vocation Vacation.
If you’re interested in learning about how to run a small soapmaking retail store, you can come to Otion for two days to learn from our management team (Erik and myself) and also take private classes on soapmaking. Click here to learn more about the Otion Vocation Vacation.
We haven’t had our first vacationer to the store yet but we’re excited to host someone and download everything we know about running a retail store! =)

This seems soooo cool. Well, I’m saving my dollars to see you. Hope you will offer Vocation Vacation in 2008.
