When making bath and beauty products, color plays a huge role. Mixing and creating your own colors is incredibly fun, and gives your creations lots of personality. Being a lover of all things colorful, I look forward to the “Color of the Year,” announced by Pantone each December. The color of the year for 2015 is “Marsala,” an earthy wine-colored red.

These lip tints give your pucker a sheer red wine hue, inspired by the color of the year. Made with the Nourish Lip Base and additional argan oil, these lip tints feel incredibly moisturizing. A small amount of Buttercreme Flavor Oil and Lip Smacking Sweet Flavor Oil add a light scent and subtle sweetness. The great thing about this color is it only requires one mica, so no complicated mixing! This tint can be applied to a brush if you’d like to avoid red color on your fingers. You can also package this tint in lip balm tubes, but keep in mind it is a softer product.

What You’ll Need:
1 oz. Nourish Lip Base
1 Tbs. Argan Oil
1.5 tsp. Merlot Sparkle Mica
1 mL Buttercreme Flavor Oil
1 mL Lip Smacking Sweet Flavor Oil
Stackable Lip Pot, base
Stackable Lip Pot, cap

  1. I’m wondering if you could recommend other lip safe micas that could be substituted for the merlot mica in this recipe and if you could use Castor instead Argan oil?

    1. Hi Traci!

Absolutely! We have some great lip safe options for this recipe. You can find a list of those colorants here: https://www.brambleberry.com/Lip-Safe-Micas-Colorants-W37.aspx

You can also use castor oil if you like! Castor oil has a heavier, more sticky consistency than the argan oil. It will give this recipe more of a glossy texture, rather than a satin texture. I would recommend making a small test batch to see if you like that glossy texture. 🙂

I love this recipe and color which is perfect for the holiday season. I have so many butters and oils left and was wondering if I can mix the nourishing base myself? Would you have a tip? Thank you Susanne

    1. Hi Susanne!

Absolutely! Leftover oils and butters can be added to a lip balm recipe and will feel nice and moisturizing on your lips. 🙂

We have an amazing post on how to make your own lip products that may be helpful for you. It goes over all the ingredients needed to make balm, and what each adds to your recipe. It also has some great recipes! I’ll link it below.

  3. Hi, Is this a natural product? I do not want to add chemical coloring to my lip balm as I was allergic to chemical substances on my lips. I would like to know where the color come from. Thank you.

    1. Hi Grace!

Merlot Sparkle Mica is comprised of mica and iron oxide. It is “nature identical.” That means it is the exact same chemical structure as the platelet minerals found in the earth, but is created in a lab to ensure purity.

To some, micas are natural. However, the term “natural” isn’t regulated, and means different things to different people! You can read more about that here: https://soapqueen.com/bath-and-body-tutorials/tips-and-tricks/natural-vs-organic/

Some micas contain FD&C colorants and are not considered natural. You can read all about micas in this Sunday Night Spotlight: https://soapqueen.com/bath-and-body-tutorials/tips-and-tricks/sunday-night-spotlight-mica-colorants/

  4. How much should I sell these size lip balms for? They’re so small, but I want to make sure I’m not killing my product and wallet with the low prices. What do you all think?

    1. Hi Samantha!

What you sell your products for is very much personal preference. It depends on the materials you used, the labor that went into it, the market you’re in, etc. We have some awesome posts on selling your products that may help you out.

  6. I have been looking for a tinted lip balm recipe everywhere, thank you so much! I was just wondering though, if I don’t put the argan oil in will I be able to use this recipe in tubes? I have 50 of them and don’t really want to buy more 🙂 Thank you!

    1. Hi Gingervee!

I’m so glad you like it! You can apply this color with your finger or with a makeup brush. 🙂
